You'll see pink everywhere! Even the NFL is getting involved. The Patriots were wearing pink sneakers and pink gloves today. The Hershey Bears will wear pink jerseys this month, and then they'll auction them off!
The American Cancer Society's Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk is two Saturday's from now, October 17th. If you haven't yet, please take a few moments to donate a few bucks to a worthy cause.
Why is it worthy? Well practically thinking, everyone has breasts. Both men and women can be afflicted with breast cancer. Men with breast cancer can go undiagnosed until it's too late.
Men, you all have one or more of the following: mothers, wives, daughters or grand-daughters. Any one of them are at risk.
We raised a nice amount of money this year, even with the rain. Hopefully next year will be even better.
We again want to thank everyone who came out, who donated items, our sponsors and our friends and family for helping out.
Crossing our fingers for a sunny day for a walk!
Sharon & Jason

LostDogPhotos Link!

Here are the details:www.lostdogphotos.com
Events - Dub & Rub
Password - 2009

Thanks again for all the great pictures!
Remember, if you purchase photos from them a portion of the proceeds will go towards the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk

I still have t-shirts. $15 for the 2009 version (all sizes available), $5 for the 2008 version (limited sizes). I tried to update the information in previous posts, but I figure I'll address them here too.
-- Jason and I currently are not affiliated with a club, but we do keep in contact with HAVOC, and we know people from CePA, the Dutch Dubbers and Reading Dubs.
--It is a show and shine. You come in with your friends, you park with your friends.
--The show and shine is for all VW drivers...air cooled and water cooled. We value both groups not only at our show, but in general.
--If you are a GTi, you could be parked next to a Van. If you are a Notchback, you could be parked next to a R32.
--We also are including Audi's this year, because we know many Audi drivers that are interested in our show...and we both feel that Audi and VW go well together.
--The show is held at a camp ground. The camp ground gets full quickly. If you haven't gotten a campsite yet, please call Twin Grove ASAP! 717/865-4602 You can Google map other camping possibilities if need be.
--Judging is spectator based. Which means that anyone with a ballot has a say.
--There are categories that could be won, but we will not place you in a category when you register. It is completely up to those judging.
--All of the 8 categories can be won by any of the cars on the field. There is no differentiating between air cooled and water cooled. A van and an R32 could win Inner Beauty, it's up to the judges (that means you!)
--This is our second year. We are still learning and value constructive criticism. As the show grows, we will make changes as needed. Our goasl for this show are to have a good time, enjoy our friends, meet new people all the while raising money for a terrific cause.
Please continue to email and call. We will always answer.
Thank you all for making this such a great time!
Sharon & Jason

Making Strides Walk Page is LIVE!!!

**this is taken directly from my Making Strides page**

Dear Friends,

This year I have signed up to walk in the American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer and I’m hoping you’ll support me. I know that there are a lot of breast cancer events out there, but Making Strides speaks to me because funds raised enable the American Cancer Society to help people stay well and get well from breast cancer, find cures, and empower people to fight back today. With your help, we can save lives.

They say that every donation makes a difference, and it really is true. I know that times are tighter than normal for many of us, but if you can spare even $5, it truly will make a difference. If everyone walking in Making Strides this year were able to raise just $5 more, we would raise an additional $3 million to fight breast cancer. Imagine what an incredible difference we could make together!

To support me in my efforts, please visit my personal page. If you’re going to be in town, I’d love for you to join my team and walk with me. If not, please support my efforts with a donation of whatever amount you can spare.

As a little extra inspiration, I thought you might like to know a few of the ways your donation will help the American Cancer Society save lives every day:

More people in our community will have the information and tools they need to help prevent breast cancer or find it early.

More people with breast cancer will have a place to turn around the clock to help them through every step of their cancer journey whether it’s a free ride to treatment, a place to stay, or just talking to someone who has "been there."

More progress will be made toward finding breast cancer’s causes and cures. The American Cancer Society has played a role in nearly every major breast cancer breakthrough of the last century, which have led to the discovery of lifesaving breast cancer treatments like Tamoxifen and Herceptin. You will help us find more.

More women like our own mothers, daughters, sisters, and grandmothers will have access to lifesaving mammograms and treatment they need.

Each of us has our own reasons for caring about the fight against breast cancer … whatever your reasons, I hope you’ll choose to make a difference by signing up to walk with me or making a donation online to support my effort. I’m so grateful to have great people like you in my life who care about breast cancer! Together we will make a difference, make history, and make strides!

LV Dutch Dubbers

As courtesy to the LV Dutch Dubbers, I wanted to make you all aware of their get together coming up at the American of Wheels Museum, (the new auto museum in Pa). They are hosting this event. Check out the Dutch Dubbers website for additional information. (A link is under our favorite things). They represented at Dub N Rub last year, and will be there again this year. They are just off the LV exit of the NE turnpike extension (1.5hrs above Phily, 20 min from NJ) If you have any questions or need further info, please email them! They are great people. Unfortunately I have to work that day or I would be cruising out that way to join them. They changed the format a bit, due to volunteer issues...but as a show and shine it worked out well I thought. I did "show" the car, but it ended up being a disaster due to an emergency vet visit at 7am. The dog's fine, but the car was full of hair! ah well, there's always next year.
I spent a good deal of the morning walking around and meeting people, trying to get the word out on the show. I met a lot of people from CePA that I knew from screen names, but not to see them personally and a few groups putting out the word on the show by posting on their sites. I did not put our fliers in unattended cars, but if you got one on your front seat thank Ko for that! I enjoyed meeting everyone, and hope I didn't harass too much. Hahaha.
I was so happy to hear that a lot of people already knew of the show...our campaign must be working then! Susquehanna Valley Vanagon Club knew all about the show, and has put June 20th on their calendar as a club function! That's so cool. I know that the Dutch Dubbers have done the same thing on their calendar too. We're on people's "to do" lists! I love it.
Lemorris got back to me today, and I have a tentative price on t-shirts. If they fall in the price range he says they will, they'll be $15 again this year.
I would love to have another company sponsor $200 to completely cover the costs of the t-shirts. If we could find one more, then the whole show will be covered and all the money donated June 20th will go toward the walk! That would be so awesome! We still have a few t-shirts left over from last year. If you're interested they are $10. Email or call me, and we can work something out via paypal and the post office!

under construction

Lemorris has sent bits and pieces of his design to us...and we are on the edge of our seats waiting to see the final product.
Rumor has it Chirco Performance and Restoration is going to be donating posters to us of the final design...I can't even begin to summarize what Chirco has to offer the air cooled community. It's because DubKorps is donating some items to the show. Rolling balls...
Well, yesterday being President's Day and all, I had the day off to roam around Central PA soliciting donations from companies. Don't fret, if I did not make it to you yesterday I will be there soon enough!

There's been some great people donating their talents to our project and we'd like to take a moment to acknowledge them:

--Scott, the GM at HA Boyd VW is donating $500 to help cover the costs of t-shirts and advertising so we don't have to take it out of the money raised by the show. Need a new whip? Talk to Scott!

--Brian Yohn of ShedPress created the logo for the show and screen printed the t-shirts last year. You all have a least one shirt from Brian. I know we have enough to clothe a small nation.

--Lemorris Harris, found our show on thesamba.com and has donated his artistic talents to creating our advertising this year. Lemorris has done work for many auto groups on the west coast. Just check out his website http://www.lemorris.com/

--Tim O. of Lost Dog Photos has offered his photography skills and will be taking pictures at the show for us. It is sort of like Christmas. You come home from work and...what's that on the doorstep? A package! I didn't buy anything lately...ohhh it's from www.thesamba.com!
TheSamba donated items will appear in the goodie bags again this year! A big thanks to TheSamba. If you are unfamiliar with the group, check out www.thesamba.com
This is directly taken from their About section:

TheSamba.com, founded in 1997 by Everett Barnes, is one of the largest Volkswagen-related online communities. In those early days of the Internet, Everett just wanted a place to post his growing collection of VW photos and literature online.
With 400,000+ photos in the gallery, 50,000+ dynamic classified ads, and lively discussion forums, TheSamba.com has gained a global audience of Volkswagen enthusiasts. The site currently includes free classifieds, a user gallery, an extensive archive of Volkswagen literature and manuals, a worldwide events listing, club listings, links, and a free business directory.
TheSamba.com content changes by the minute so keep one eye on the classifieds for deals and one eye on the forums for technical and informative discussions!

It's a terrific site, with oodles of air cooled information from all over!

Dub and Rub 2009--information

Where: Twin Grove Park & Campground KOA
1445 Suedberg Rd Pine Grove, PA 17963
**Call 717-865-4602 to make reservations the sooner the better**
When: June 20, 2009
9AM-Noon registration
How Much: $10 donation to register, $1 for spectators
*children under 12 free
Goodie bags, one per registered show car, are first come and until they run out. We'd like to do as much advertising as possible, so please forward along as you see fit!
All your questions should be directed to either Jason or myself, jasonpowley@gmail.com or sharonpowley@gmail.com.
We'll be looking for volunteers closer to the show to help with parking on the field.
Remember to book your campsite early! Twin Grove fills up quickly.
There's so much to do there--poolside, amusement park, mini golf--that with it being Father's Day weekend...you may want to stay over!

Holiday Cheer

Not much is going on right now with the show, only because of the holidays being here. It's hard to juggle too many things. Please either email sharonpowley@gmail.com or jasonpowley@gmail.com. Last year alone, dedicated supporters like you raised more than $50 million nationwide to help the American Cancer Society continue fighting breast cancer and offer hope to people facing the disease.

As the nation’s largest source of private, nonprofit cancer research funds, the American Cancer Society has distributed more than $3.1 billion to researchers since 1946. We take pride in funding promising researchers early in their careers, and our track record is something we share with pride. Of the researchers chosen for Society funding throughout the years, 42 have gone on to win the Nobel Prize. In fact, the Society invests more in breast cancer research grants every year than we raise through our Making Strides events. Generous donations have allowed the American Cancer Society to be involved in many of the major breast cancer research breakthroughs of the century:

Lumpectomy and radiation for treatment of breast cancer
Mammography to screen for breast cancer
Use of tamoxifen to reduce risk of second or first breast cancer
Development of monoclonal antibodies to treat breast cancer (Herceptin) and lymphoma (Rituxan)
Discovery of genes for inherited breast and colon cancer
Knowledge that genetics, diet, lack of exercise, and alcohol abuse can increase a person's cancer risk
Discovery of cancer-causing oncogenes and tumor-suppressor genes

While the Society spends more on breast cancer than on any other solid tumor site, many of the research grants we support may have relevance to many kinds of cancers. Currently, breast cancer research projects are underway at institutions across the country, thanks in large part to the funds raised by Making Strides Against Breast Cancer participants. With your continued help, we can fund more critical research projects one of which could result in a breakthrough that would lead to fewer diagnoses and lower the number of deaths from breast cancer each year.
The American Cancer Society recommends that all women 40 and older get a mammogram every year, in addition to a clinical breast exam by their doctor or nurse as part of their regular health checkups. We know that knowledge is power, and we won’t stop until every woman understands how they can take control of their breast health.
The American Cancer Society provides information and education, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year … and for that reason, we have been the most trusted resource for cancer information for nearly a century. More than a million people call our toll-free number every year at 1-800-ACS-2345, and we have more than 20 million visitors to our Web site annually. Because cancer impacts people of every race and nationality, the American Cancer Society provides educational materials in a variety of languages.
A Voice for All WomenRight now, cancer can't be defeated in doctors' offices alone. We need elected officials to fully fund prevention and early detection screenings for all eligible women. The American Cancer Society works hard to keep breast cancer funding a top priority with our nation’s lawmakers. Thanks in large part to donations from Making Strides Against Breast Cancer and in partnership with our sister advocacy organization, the American Cancer Society Cancer Action NetworkSM (ACS CAN), our advocacy efforts are affecting many of the laws that govern what options are available for people battling cancer.
We have successfully lobbied Congress for millions of dollars for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention National Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program, which helps low-income, uninsured, and underinsured women get access to critical screenings and follow-up treatment. We are currently working to increase funding for the program so it can serve more eligible women.
We actively support legislation that would improve the quality of treatment for breast cancer patients and the quality of life for breast cancer survivors.
We mobilized 100,000 volunteers to defeat legislation that would have allowed insurance companies to reduce cancer screening coverage.
We are addressing disparities by promoting important public policies that provide access to quality health care and screening for all women. Everyone has the potential to get cancer … and the potential to help fight it. For more information about how you can use your voice to help us fight breast cancer, call us at 1-800-ACS-2345 or visit www.acscan.org/makingstrides.
A Community of SupportHaving cancer is hard. He aslo donated the money raised.

It was an amazing day full of support!

2008 Flyer---SHOW US YOUR DDUBS!

The flyer created last year was done by Brian Shertzer, a member of HAVOC and known to many CePa members!
I loved the effect of the cars in the background. We printed off hundreds of color copies. Hundreds!

It took a long time to decide on the name of the show, and Dub and Rub just sort of stuck. If you notice on the initial flyer printed in April, we did not have an official name yet. It's just "a show and shine".

There were a few hitches the day of the show, but we managed to pull it together...and it turned out to be a great day.

We learned somethings and we'll apply them to 2009 to make it even better!

Dub and Rub 2008

Dub and Rub 2008 was the first year for the show. Brian Yohn created the design for Jason and I. We were so pleased with it!

Jason belongs to HAVOC, the Harrisburg Area Volkswagen Owner's Club, and we were able to use some of their show stuff (tables, tents, money box!) The club also spotted us the money upfront that allowed us to buy the t-shirts and vinyl clings. After I paid them back, Jason and I donated the remaining money to Making Strides.

HAVOC's board members then voted to donate a lump sum to the walk.

This year we are trying to garner sponsers, so we will be able to donate ALL the money raised.

American Cancer Society

The American Cancer Society has a number of wonderful programs for those diagnosed with breast cancer. (A walk held every October by the American Cancer Society to raise awareness.) http://www.makingstrides.acsevents.org/ And became a VW show and shine held at Twin Grove Parks in Pine Grove, PA

Jason, my husband, has been involved with Volkswagen's since he was 17. His first Volkswagen was a MKII Jetta, and his pride and joy. Since I've known him he has owned a 1987 Scirocco 16v, a Jetta 2slow and a GTI VR6. I will admit that right now, I am not driving a VW...but they have grown on me, and I have my heart set on a new Rabbit.

The day of the show, we had 90 VW's register and approximately 100 spectators. The money raised (after paying the bills) went toward the walk. We were able to donate $1333 from the show. Registration was a $10 donation and spectators donated $1. We had t-shirts made up by Brian Yohn, from ShedPress and sold them for $15 each. Throughout the year, I held a few other smaller fundraisers and raised about $2000 total for the walk.

Advertisement was low key at first, but word of mouth was remarkable! Flyers were handed out at Volksfest in Campbelltown, PA and DripFest in Spring Mountain, PA. The show was advertised on the Internet through http://www.readingdubs.com/, http://www.vwvortex.com/, http://www.vwforum.com/, http://www.thesamba.com/,http://www.cepavw.org/
Slowly other sites picked up on it, and it spread throughout PA, NJ and MD. We got donations from many different companies to make up goodie bags and have raffle prizes. The companies that donated were:
A&A Auto Store- Penbrook
S&P
HE Performance ---http://www.heperformance.com/
HA Boyd ----www.haboydvw.com

(HA Boyd is one of our sponsers for the 2009 show!)
NGP Racing ----www.ngpracing.com
O'Brien Audio
Next Level
H2Oi
Universal Vintage Tire
AACA Museum
AP Tuning
ShedPress ---www.shedpress.com
America on Wheels Museum
thesamba.com
vwforum.com

The 8 categories were Perkiest, Best Topless, Junk in the Trunk, Saggy, All Natural, Best Cleavage, Best Implants and Most Supportive. Each class had one winner, and drove home with a plaque.

We were pleased with the outcome of the show, and decided that we would have it again in 2009 with a few tweaks...

For 2009 we are inviting both VW and Audi's to show. We are looking for sponsors for next year in order to cover our overhead. So far, HA Boyd out of Lebanon, PA has offered to sponsor part of the show. We are still looking for a few more companies!

We're going to work on the categories too, but nothing concrete just yet!

We'll be posting pictures from the show soon.

Keep an eye on us!

Sharon & Jason
