How your dollars make a difference

The title "How Your Dollars Make a Difference" is a direct link to the American Cancer Society's page that informs its Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walkers how the donations they collect are used.

  • Help people to stay well: Offer tips to prevent or detect cancer early, when it's most treatable
  • Help people get well: Offer free programs and services in more then 3400 communities across the country
  • Finding cures: Invest more in breast cancer research-to better understand, prevent and cure the disease-then any other solid tumor site.
  • Fighting back: Work with legislators to pass laws advocating all women to have access to mammograms and lifesaving treatments.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Welcome to October!
Officially October is Breast Cancer awareness month. You'll see pink everywhere! Even the NFL is getting involved. The Patriots were wearing pink sneakers and pink gloves today. The Hershey Bears will wear pink jerseys this month, and then they'll auction them off!
The American Cancer Society's Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk is two Saturday's from now, October 17th. If you haven't yet, please take a few moments to donate a few bucks to a worthy cause.
Why is it worthy? Well practically thinking, everyone has breasts. Both men and women can be afflicted with breast cancer. Men with breast cancer can go undiagnosed until it's too late.
Men, you all have one or more of the following: mothers, wives, daughters or grand-daughters. Any one of them are at risk.
We raised a nice amount of money this year, even with the rain. Hopefully next year will be even better.
We again want to thank everyone who came out, who donated items, our sponsors and our friends and family for helping out.
Crossing our fingers for a sunny day for a walk!

donations

We had a question about where people could make donations if they can't make the show. We attached a link to the word 'donations' in the title. Click on that and you will go directly to Sharon's page on the Making Strides website. You can also take the long route and go to http://www.cancer.org/ look for the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk in Harrisburg on City Island, then type in the name Sharon Powley and donate that way.

Thank you, and we'll see you tomorrow!

Blame it on the rain...yeah yeah

USPS delivered the posters (which are freaking awesome!!) and FedEx delivered the bags from Airhead.
The awards should be done June 19th, and are going to be picked up by myself in New Cumberland.
UPS swears the t-shirts will be delivered on June 19th. (I am still not 100% sure why it took 2 days for the t-shirts to go from CO to IL, but it may have something to do with UPS requiring their drivers to backpack part of the way. Just a guess on my part.)

On a more show related note:
**Brian Yohn (ShedPress) is going to be donating t-shirts! Thank you very much Brian.
**The guys at NGP are hand delivering their donations to us on the day of the show! Thanks again guys. NGP is a great bunch of people, and I have had great experiences working with them.
**LostDog Photos has something pretty cool worked up for the show. Thank you again!
**Eurotuner may do a small little blurb...it depends on how quick I can get them the info and pix. Still it's pretty cool they're even asking!
I believe that I've covered everything...less then 48 hours away, and the weather report is not all that favorable...
but we're going to have fun regardless!

dumdumdum....5 days

5 days...am I panicking that I have no t-shirts?? no.
5 days...am I freaking out that the awards will be done on June 19th because in our house moving glaze they got forgotten about?? no.
5 days...am I losing sleep over the fact that the vinyl isn't here?? no.
5 days...am I considering hari-kari because the goodie bags aren't here?? no.
AM I A BIG FAT LIAR?? slightly. Hari-kari is a little extreme over some bags. *shrug*

yes, yes...5 days away and a few of the "major" items are not here. BUT, what can I do? I have contacted all of the people involved, and all have promised me that they'll be here before June 20th. Any of the above begins occurring, and I'll end up on Haldol in a white padded room wrapped up like a bug in a rug. Crossing my fingers and hoping for the best!

12 days until Dub N Rub

It's 12 days until Dub N Rub and I have nothing new to report!
T-shirts are coming...goodie bags are coming...posters are coming
Pretty much what we have donated is in a tote ready to be raffled off.
Next weekend I've enlisted a few relatives to help me do some small stuff, and I need to wash/detail my car a day or so before. I can't show up at our show with a filthy VW!
Jason and I just bought our very first house, and it's been a bit of a scramble trying to keep everything organized for the show and the house! I will never do anything that big a month before the show.
Email us with any questions~
See you there
Sharon & Jason

RenegadeVW.com

www.renegadevw.com

Thanks to Ryan from RenegadeVW.com.
Unfortunately he's got another commitment June 20th, but he's still representing by sending us some items for our goodie bags!
Some background: A couple of VW enthusiasts started RenegadeVW.com in 2006 because they were sick of the censorship on “other” discussion forums. They offer an open, anything goes forum to talk about anything from cars to music to current events and everything in between. Check out our links to their site, and keep an eye out for them at the shows!

Random Reminders about Dub N Rub

Over the past few days I've had a few phone calls and emails that asked some pretty good questions. I tried to update the information in previous posts, but I figure I'll address them here too.
-- Jason and I currently are not affiliated with a club, but we do keep in contact with HAVOC, and we know people from CePA, the Dutch Dubbers and Reading Dubs.
--It is a show and shine. You come in with your friends, you park with your friends.
--The show and shine is for all VW drivers...air cooled and water cooled. We value both groups not only at our show, but in general.
--If you are a GTi, you could be parked next to a Van. If you are a Notchback, you could be parked next to a R32.
--We also are including Audi's this year, because we know many Audi drivers that are interested in our show...and we both feel that Audi and VW go well together.
--The show is held at a camp ground. The camp ground gets full quickly. If you haven't gotten a campsite yet, please call Twin Grove ASAP! 717/865-4602 You can Google map other camping possibilities if need be.
--Judging is spectator based. Which means that anyone with a ballot has a say.
--There are categories that could be won, but we will not place you in a category when you register. It is completely up to those judging.
--All of the 8 categories can be won by any of the cars on the field. There is no differentiating between air cooled and water cooled. A van and an R32 could win Inner Beauty, it's up to the judges (that means you!)
--This is our second year. We are still learning and value constructive criticism. As the show grows, we will make changes as needed. Our goasl for this show are to have a good time, enjoy our friends, meet new people all the while raising money for a terrific cause.
Please continue to email and call. We will always answer.
Thank you all for making this such a great time!

Making Strides Walk Page is LIVE!!!

**this is taken directly from my Making Strides page**

Dear Friends,

This year I have signed up to walk in the American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer and I’m hoping you’ll support me. I know that there are a lot of breast cancer events out there, but Making Strides speaks to me because funds raised enable the American Cancer Society to help people stay well and get well from breast cancer, find cures, and empower people to fight back today. With your help, we can save lives.

They say that every donation makes a difference, and it really is true. I know that times are tighter than normal for many of us, but if you can spare even $5, it truly will make a difference. If everyone walking in Making Strides this year were able to raise just $5 more, we would raise an additional $3 million to fight breast cancer. Imagine what an incredible difference we could make together!

To support me in my efforts, please visit my personal page. If you’re going to be in town, I’d love for you to join my team and walk with me. If not, please support my efforts with a donation of whatever amount you can spare.

As a little extra inspiration, I thought you might like to know a few of the ways your donation will help the American Cancer Society save lives every day:

  • More people in our community will have the information and tools they need to help prevent breast cancer or find it early.
  • More people with breast cancer will have a place to turn around the clock to help them through every step of their cancer journey whether it’s a free ride to treatment, a place to stay, or just talking to someone who has "been there."
  • More progress will be made toward finding breast cancer’s causes and cures. The American Cancer Society has played a role in nearly every major breast cancer breakthrough of the last century, which have led to the discovery of lifesaving breast cancer treatments like Tamoxifen and Herceptin. You will help us find more.
  • More women like our own mothers, daughters, sisters, and grandmothers will have access to lifesaving mammograms and treatment they need.

Each of us has our own reasons for caring about the fight against breast cancer … whatever your reasons, I hope you’ll choose to make a difference by signing up to walk with me or making a donation online to support my effort. I’m so grateful to have great people like you in my life who care about breast cancer! Together we will make a difference, make history, and make strides!

LV Dutch Dubbers

As courtesy to the LV Dutch Dubbers, I wanted to make you all aware of their get together coming up at the American of Wheels Museum, (the new auto museum in Pa). They are hosting this event. Check out the Dutch Dubbers website for additional information. (A link is under our favorite things). They represented at Dub N Rub last year, and will be there again this year. They are just off the LV exit of the NE turnpike extension (1.5hrs above Phily, 20 min from NJ) If you have any questions or need further info, please email them! They are great people. Unfortunately I have to work that day or I would be cruising out that way to join them. I wish them a sunny day with tons of Dubbers!

Grand Opening

Back in the fall, Lemorris contacted us after seeing last year's show posted on theSamba. He wanted to contribute his talent to our show because of how cancer has affected him in his life. We were excited to work with him. He took our ideas, and worked in last years t-shirt design by Brian Yohn and created something unique for us and we truly appreciate all his time and efforts!
Many companies have donated items to the show, people have lent their raw talent and a few have made monetary contributions that are giving the show the edge to top last year in donations.
This is no ordinary show and shine, this is Dub N Rub...a fundraiser for Making Strides Against Breast Cancer! Who doesn't want to save boobies?

Volksfest, etc

HAVOC put on a great show today in Campbelltown! They changed the format a bit, due to volunteer issues...but as a show and shine it worked out well I thought. I did "show" the car, but it ended up being a disaster due to an emergency vet visit at 7am. The dog's fine, but the car was full of hair! ah well, there's always next year.
I spent a good deal of the morning walking around and meeting people, trying to get the word out on the show. I met a lot of people from CePA that I knew from screen names, but not to see them personally and a few groups putting out the word on the show by posting on their sites. I did not put our fliers in unattended cars, but if you got one on your front seat thank Ko for that! I enjoyed meeting everyone, and hope I didn't harass too much. Hahaha.
I was so happy to hear that a lot of people already knew of the show...our campaign must be working then! Susquehanna Valley Vanagon Club knew all about the show, and has put June 20th on their calendar as a club function! That's so cool. I know that the Dutch Dubbers have done the same thing on their calendar too. We're on people's "to do" lists! I love it.
Lemorris got back to me today, and I have a tentative price on t-shirts. If they fall in the price range he says they will, they'll be $15 again this year.
I would love to have another company sponsor $200 to completely cover the costs of the t-shirts. If we could find one more, then the whole show will be covered and all the money donated June 20th will go toward the walk! That would be so awesome! We still have a few t-shirts left over from last year. If you're interested they are $10. Email or call me, and we can work something out via paypal and the post office!

under construction

Lemorris has sent bits and pieces of his design to us...and we are on the edge of our seats waiting to see the final product.
Rumor has it Chirco Performance and Restoration is going to be donating posters to us of the final design...I can't even begin to summarize what Chirco has to offer the air cooled community. Just take a look for yourself....www.chirco.com
They've also generously offered 10% off purchases when you tell them Dub and Rub sent you! That's an awesome deal guys, thanks again for your generosity!

I love the smell of napalm in the morning

What's with the movie quote? It's because DubKorps is donating some items to the show. I am very new to DubKorps forum and am still a lowly Private, but I just ordered my Sector 2 sticker and I can't wait to get it!
The show is rapidly approaching, and just recently Jason and I put a bid on a house. We're getting all the inspections and mortgage stuff going, and I'm quickly running out of time during the day. But enough about that. I've added a link to DubKorps under " a few of our favorite things"....

Volksride.com/Vintage Bucket INC

We are very excited to thank Mark from Vintage Bucket INC...his site is http://www.volksride.com/. Volksride is oriented towared the VW air cooled community.
Mark contacted me early on in my soliciting, regarding being a part of the show. His desire to help us is due to how cancer has affected him and his family.
Thanks again Mark!

Coming Soon!

Lemorris sent us the above design for our postcard advertising and we love it. We added some text and ordered them the beginning of March. By the time Volksfest rolls around you'll start seeing them completely done. While I'll be at Volksfest selling t-shirts from last year and handing out the fliers for this years show, I'm also think I may be showing my car for the first time! It's really just brand spanking stock at this point, but eventually we'll get to doing things.
If you registered last year, we asked for your email address so be prepared to see an email from us closer to the time of the show. We won't be spammin or clogging up your inbox, so do not fear! I think I have emails and phone calls out to every possible company I can think of...but I'm always up for suggestions, and if you're in with someone and think they may be interested...give out my info!
It's getting closer...can't wait to see you there!

APTuning Lebanon PA

Mike and Sue of AP Tuning in Lebanon PA have been incredibly generous to Dub and Rub. Last year they donated products for our raffle, and this year they've offered to sponsor part of the show in order to keep our costs down and our donations to Making Strides Against Breast Cancer up! Thank you both for your support of our show and shine, and for your support of raising breast cancer awareness. ApTuning offers a wide variety of OEM Audi/VW/Porsche parts and services. They also do ECU software (chipping) and DynoServices.
They can be contacted at 717-272-0916 by phone or via internet using the above link.

Watch out Ants!

Jason and I had the day off today and drove around looking for companies to donate for the raffle and our goodie bags! I love the new car, and had such a great time driving it. Things are solidifying, and it's becoming a show. We signed the contract with Twin Grove, and are slowing getting things together. The show is starting to shape up, and with it now March we're ramping up our motivation. Don't forget to call Twin Grove to reserve your spot ASAP. They go quickly.

Balls are rolling

Hmmm, doesn't sound healthy though does it? Rolling balls...
Well, yesterday being President's Day and all, I had the day off to roam around Central PA soliciting donations from companies. Don't fret, if I did not make it to you yesterday I will be there soon enough!

There's been some great people donating their talents to our project and we'd like to take a moment to acknowledge them:

--Scott, the GM at HA Boyd VW is donating $500 to help cover the costs of t-shirts and advertising so we don't have to take it out of the money raised by the show. Need a new whip? Talk to Scott!

--Brian Yohn of ShedPress created the logo for the show and screen printed the t-shirts last year. You all have a least one shirt from Brian. I know we have enough to clothe a small nation.

--Lemorris Harris, found our show on thesamba.com and has donated his artistic talents to creating our advertising this year. Lemorris has done work for many auto groups on the west coast. Just check out his website http://www.lemorris.com/

--Tim O. of Lost Dog Photos has offered his photography skills and will be taking pictures at the show for us. He has a great talent and we're very excited to have him donating his time and talent. http://www.lostdogphotos.com/

We are grateful to all of them for helping us raise money for Making Strides Against Breast Cancer! That's what all this is about. Raising money to help women, and men.

Check out the ACS website to see where the money we raise will go!

TheSamba-When your daily driver isn't enough!

I love when stuff comes in the mail. It is sort of like Christmas. You come home from work and...what's that on the doorstep? A package! I didn't buy anything lately...ohhh it's from www.thesamba.com!
TheSamba donated items will appear in the goodie bags again this year! A big thanks to TheSamba. If you are unfamiliar with the group, check out www.thesamba.com
This is directly taken from their About section:

TheSamba.com, founded in 1997 by Everett Barnes, is one of the largest Volkswagen-related online communities. In those early days of the Internet, Everett just wanted a place to post his growing collection of VW photos and literature online.
With 400,000+ photos in the gallery, 50,000+ dynamic classified ads, and lively discussion forums, TheSamba.com has gained a global audience of Volkswagen enthusiasts. The site currently includes free classifieds, a user gallery, an extensive archive of Volkswagen literature and manuals, a worldwide events listing, club listings, links, and a free business directory.
TheSamba.com content changes by the minute so keep one eye on the classifieds for deals and one eye on the forums for technical and informative discussions!

It's a terrific site, with oodles of air cooled information from all over!

Dub and Rub 2009--information

Where: Twin Grove Park & Campground KOA
1445 Suedberg Rd Pine Grove, PA 17963
**Call 717-865-4602 to make reservations the sooner the better**
When: June 20, 2009
9AM-Noon registration
How Much: $10 donation to register, $1 for spectators
*children under 12 free
Goodie bags, one per registered show car, are first come and until they run out. We'll have t-shirts for sale again. Raffle tickets and 50/50 will also be sold.

The show and shine was created to raise money for the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk that occurrs each October on City Island in Harrisburg PA. The show is open to both air and water cooled VW's! This year we are inviting Audi's to show along with all our VW friends! We changed up the "classes" some by creating a 1st and 2nd place for the following:

All Natural: Daily drivers
Best Cleavage: Best display
Best Topless: Convertibles
Perkiest: High performance
Inner Beauty: Overall interior
Junk in the Trunk: Stereo system
Most Supportive: Most supportive of breast cancer awareness
Saggiest: Lowest

At this point, all vehicles will be judged together (no separation for the air cooled, water cooled or Audi's). As the show grows up a bit, we will definitely make accommodations!

This year, Twin Grove will be dishing up the food in the pavilion. There is a restaurant and ice cream parlor within easy walking of the field. An amusement park and mini golf course are also accessible. Bathroom facilities are luxurious and also within walking distance. It's a pet friendly crew, just bring them leashed.

We are hoping to have enough sponsorship that ALL the money raised this year will go to the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk!

It sounds so far away, but it is just a short 5 1/2 months! So much to do still.

Twin Grove Park Campground

HipHipHooray!
Just to keep everyone up to date, Twin Grove Park is holding June 20, 2009 for Jason and I to hold Dub and Rub there! We are very excited about it. We have to sign the contract, but for now we have committed to it on a proverbial handshake.
Jason and I will be posting up the official information in the forums found under "Some of our favorite things". We'd like to do as much advertising as possible, so please forward along as you see fit!
All your questions should be directed to either Jason or myself, jasonpowley@gmail.com or sharonpowley@gmail.com.
We'll be looking for volunteers closer to the show to help with parking on the field.
Remember to book your campsite early! Twin Grove fills up quickly.
There's so much to do there--poolside, amusement park, mini golf--that with it being Father's Day weekend...you may want to stay over!
